Marimbas, flutes, clarinets, violins, guasás, drums, among others are responsible of making people dance. Each night at the Petronio Álvarez is a party to celebrate the sounds of the traditional Colombian pacific music.
The modalities which are showcased during the Petronio Álvarez music festival are: Caucan Violin Ensemble, Chirimía ensemble, Marimba and traditional chants ensemble and Open ensemble.
The cuisine from the Colombian pacific is recognized for its flavour. The “matronas” carry in their hands the seasoning of their region. Ceviches, encocados, empanadas and a wide variety of dishes based on seafood are part of the culinary delights available at the Petronio.
Artisanal products made with natural fibers from coconut, chocolatillo, plaintain stem, tetera, remind us that the roots of the pacific are tied to its land, its sea and its rivers. The design of the handicrafts evocates their natural richness.
Arrechón, tumbacatre, curado, tomaseca are some of the traditional drinks from the Colombian Pacific. Those who know say they have aphrodisiac powers and that they are healers for the soul and body.
Fashion and Hairdos
Fashion and beauty also are part of the Petronio Alvarez. The festival is a window to the latest trends in fashion, specialized afro beauty products and to the hairdos and braids which weave the roots of this tradition.
Family and Ancestral Knowledge
The space “Quilombo German Patiño Ossa” seeks to build and recognize the educational sphere behind the diverse cultural manifestations originating from the Colombian pacific.
This is a venue for families, where knowledge and traditions are exchanged; the uniqueness of the Colombian pacific communities are made evident while also contributing to building an audience for afro colombian culture.
The “Petronito” (Little Petronio) gathers the inheritors of the musical tradition of the Colombian Pacific. This is a meeting space where children that live in Cali and are from Valle, Cauca, Nariño and Chocó, have the opportunity to come close to their music, ancestral culture through different workshops.
‘El Bombo Golpeador’
El Bombo Golpeador (The beating drum) is the award received by the best performers of traditional pacific music. This is a work of art created by the master and plastic artist Diego Pombo, which grants the title as an ambassador of the pacific music.
